Communicating with Images in Art and Design Task 2

Interview with Encik Suzlee Ibrahim.

Encik Suzlee is one of the nation's most notable abstract painter and abstract expressionist from 1997. He is 46 years old and master of fine arts. Suzlee has been in the art scene for more than 25 years.  His famous artistic medium is painting acrylic and history art movement which is Abstract Expressionism (1940 - 1955). The biggest artistic inspiration is he met Robert Rauschenberg in 1997, he was inspired by this painter. He started to paint since he was 19 and he worked in graphic department at advertising and publishing companies before he become a lecturer since 1993. Since then, Suzlee had taught at more  than four institutes in Kuala Lumpur.

Through the long years of his experience as an artist, he always painted on canvas to produce his abstract expressionist style painting.  There were many times, he wanted to do more textures but canvas limits his action. As we understand that canvas serves us one plane surface and one sided within a frame. Canvas can be rolled, folded and used as collage by layering of it to create texture. Between that, it also has soft structure, which is not suitable to stand as relief work on its own. Thats the reason he decided to find out some new material to develop his new medium of artwork. Suzlee latest artwork is not only apply on canvas, he started explore the potential property of petroleum based material that is "Polyurethane" as a new medium of artwork. Polyurethane is flexible under heat and melt under strong fire. Suzlee used fire to heat up and burn the material to get accidental effects, different degree of fire produces different heat level and this produces different effect to the material. The effects may alter the form, shape and texture of the material, it also can be combined layer by layer to help create relief and thickness. The polyurethane IS finished with oil colour and varnish. He believes this will become a new challenge and enhance the creative process of work. We are very lucky to have a chance for visit 24th Solo art Exhibition by Suzlee Ibrahim "Wall Sculpture" in ASWARA Malaysia.
